Students, faculty, parents, friends, and parishioners gathered at the new St. Mary's food pantry this morning -- in between servings of Thanksgiving Breakfast! -- to dedicate and bless the new location of the parish's food pantry. The pantry, now located in two refurbished bays of the rectory garage, serves more than 40 families a week, and SMSA families are some of its most faithful supporters.
When Rev. Scott VanDerveer, St. Mary's pastor, decided the new location needed a mural, he turned to SMSA's new Principal, Patrick Gormley, an artist and illustrator. Mr. Gormley designed and sketched a mural based on the theme of "God's bounty." Amy Noonan, mother of SMSA student, Quinn Noonan, was the principal painter on the mural project.
Today, Father Scott prayed and sprinkled holy water on the building as onlookers extended their hands in blessing and SMSA 7th grader Madeleine Lieberth played "Song of Thanksgiving" on the flute. Gary Patton, Business and Operation Manager of the parish, gave a brief review of the food pantry's history, thanking the many people who have sustained it over the years. Mr. Gormley described his inspiration for the mural, and SMSA students sang, "Sing Out Earth and Skies."
